FAQs
When and where does hackathon take place?
You’ll prepare for the Hackathon online from 8th – 18th October, using the tools we provide and meeting our mentors throughout. On the 19th of October, you will attend a Coding Dojo IN PERSON at Dubai World Trade Center to collaboratively ideate on the problem spaces and meet each other while brushing up your skills for Python on the web. You'll also get to practice presenting in a safe space. On the 20th of October, you’ll present your submitted solution and its accompanying presentation to our mentors IN PERSON in the Dubai World Trade Centre. If you make it through to the final round of presentations, you’ll get to present to the judges and everyone else at the hack.
Who can participate? When will I know I've got a guaranteed place in the hackathon?
This hackathon is open to everyone. Whether you are a coder, a designer, an ideas person, or you know how to speak in public, you are welcome and encouraged to join us. All you need is passion! This hackathon has no age limit. We have limited spaces, with up to 80 physical participants able to join us. The first 20 registrations will be guaranteed a spot, so register whilst you still can!
Can I participate alone?
Yes you can, but you might find it hard to create a solution on time. Our recommendation is to find a team of around 4-6 people (max 8), with different abilities. For example: one person codes, one knows design, and one person organises the team's work and presents your results. If you don't already have a team in mind when you register, don't worry. We will have an event dedicated to team building. Nobody will get left behind.
What will I do during the hack?
From the 2nd – 18th Oct you’ll be participating in hack activities. This generally includes a few days ONLINE to get used to the tools we’ll be sharing, a week of ONLINE ideation and solution creation, and a final presentation IN-PERSON at Global DevSlam on 19th - 20th October. Throughout this timeframe, you’ll have access to mentors who will provide feedback and support on your solutions.
When and how can I sign up?
Registration will remain open until 13th October. We will communicate with you via email and Discord upon registration. To make sure you get all the useful information (e.g. the schedule, tool walkthroughs), sign up as early as possible. Only the first 60 - 80 participants will be able to guarantee their place in the hackathon so guarantee yours now!
Why should I sign up for a hackathon?
Great question! Hackathons are a fantastic opportunity to test yourself: can you create a feasible working solution to a problem in such a short time? You’ll get to learn from your teammates, your mentors and also your competitors. And there’s prizes too, of course. Who doesn’t like winning, especially after working hard on something?
Can I take the idea further after this hackathon? Does my idea stand?
The intellectual property of projects developed by established teams during the hackathon belongs to the team of developers who create it. Existing technologies and tools that are used by the developers belong to the owners and creators of the tools and technologies.
How can I benefit from mentors' expertise?
We’ll be setting up mentor chats so that each team has the opportunity to discuss and get feedback on their ideas. To benefit from this, make sure you book in with mentors when we open up the appointments. Information about this will be shared on our hackathon Discord server.
How do I redeem my complimentary ticket to Global DevSlam?
You will be sent your ticket to Global DevSlam a week prior to the event via email. Only official participants attending the hack will receive a ticket.
